US/Japan Hybrid Management & Strategy: The Key to Successful Localization (Japanese Track)

ROBERTSON AUDITORIUM ROOM 2

3:30pm – 5:00pm

Vice President, Kintone Consulting at Kintone

Yu Tanabe is the Vice President of kintone Consulting Group for kintone Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Japanese software company, Cybozu, Inc. Tanabe is responsible for creating new business for Cybozu’s U.S. operations, after the company launched its first U.S. office in San Francisco in 2014.

Before joining Cybozu, Tanabe had a successful twenty-year career at Nikkei, Inc., publisher of Japan’s largest daily business newspaper, similar to the Wall Street Journal. Among his many positions at Nikkei, Tanabe created and built two new businesses for the company –

In 2003, Tanabe led Nikkei’s CSR Project, which identified and encouraged corporate social responsible activities among Japanese companies.

In 2007, Nikkei sent Tanabe to Los Angeles where he created Green Innovation Connect, a platform to introduce Japanese green technology to the United States.

With his entrepreneurial experiences at Nikkei, Tanabe recognized there is a huge gap between Japanese companies’ management and their line of business. Tanabe wanted to help bridge that gap. He found a perfect fit at Cybozu. Cybozu, Japanese for “cyber-kid”, has the leading market share of web-based groupware in Japan. However, the company has little knowledge outside Japan. Tanabe is eager to grow the company in the United States and to serve as a bridge connecting Japan and U.S. businesses.

Tanabe serves as a member of the board of the Japan America Society of Southern California. He received a bachelor’s degree in social welfare at Sophia University in Tokyo. He also earned a master degree in economics from Nagoya University, and his MBA with a focus on international business, from Ecole de Nationale Ponte et Chaussee in Paris.
